We lost quite a few trees in the storm here in Aberdeenshire the other night…
Another one of those chickens hopping about the woods this morning…
The orange paint on this tree means that this tree is scheduled for execution. This tree and trees like it are suffering from Dutch Elm Disease and are dying anyway. The good news is that the trees, once executed, are cut up and left on the ground to slowly rot away and, importantly, become home for all sorts of tiny creatures. We’re hoping that more trees will be planted to replaced the now condemned trees.

It was the colour that caught my eye..
We were up in the Scottish hills this morning where a number of trees have been cut down (to allow others more space to grow we think). We noticed this strange wooden-like growth (shaped like a toilet seat) growing around the top of the tree stump. Appropriately brown! We’re not quite sure what causes this growth. It is solid and is not some kind of fungus. We noticed the ‘toilet seat’ on several tree stumps. What are these growths? That question has got us stumped too. Anyone know the answer?

For those people who remember Andy Capp and his creator Reg Smythe. The fungus is the right shape for Andy’s cap!
Where else would bats hang out?
We’ve noticed quite a few trees up here in the Cairngorms that appear to be dying. Disease? Polution? We’re not sure but a pity to see trees dying off…
….it just turned out the way it did…

Hemmeland is a great place to see nature, picnics, sunbathing and for dog walks. At Hemmeland you’ll find a mixture of wildlife, flowers, plants, trees, beaches and much more. There was a northeasterly wind today blowing at between 10-15 Knots. You’ll hear quite a lot of noise generated as the wind blew through the treetops. You’ll also hear the dog sniffing around.

A walk towards the darkness…..
The Night Walk
We hardly ever notice leaves but they are wonderfully engineered structures.
Whilst taking the dog for a walk this morning I took a photograph of some tree bark. Great for backgrounds and overlays (see next post). And then I started to wonder. Why is bark so wrinkly?
Just back from a dog walk with the camera. Spring exploding in all directions out there in the woods…
I’m trying to work out why this tree root took off on its own journey…..
After the Brexit vote in my own country, the American elections and the forthcoming elections in Europe, I was searching for an image which best summed up our systems of democracy. Here it is. The Democracy Tree. Well and truly broken.
For some reason this high-rise fungi was growing up the side of just one tree in the entire forest. I took the photograph yesterday, by this morning the fungi had all died back. Strange is the life of fungi.
Autumn is just around the corner….
