The Big Red Trawler

You’ll have to take my word for it that BF515 (BF for home port Banff, Scotland) is red (and white) but she is, and she’s being fitted out in MacDuff Harbour. In this image, it is low water and Big Red is resting on the harbour bottom.

Great photo Richard, seems like the hulls directly on the ground would damage them and the rudder/propeller.

  2. No, MacDuff Harbour is quite shallow. There are two parts to the harbour, the inner and outer harbour. The inner harbour is shallower it’s also where all the work is carried out on boats. The harbour bottom is a mixture of silt and sand and so the boats just rest on the sludge until the tide comes back in. These trawlers are sturdy vessels built to survive the worst weather in the world and often have a halo around their props these days (improved efficiency I think). BF515 only just managed to squeeze into the harbour when she arrived to be fitted out. I hear that there are only a couple of dates in the year when she’ll be able to leave (heavy with new equipment). She will have to wait for an exceptionally high tide. And, she gets into and out of the harbour with millimetres to spare. Hoping to be there when she leaves with camera at the ready. You’ll just have to come over when this virus thing is behind us John! A bit of a change to life in the desert!

That would be a huge change! Thanks for the info on the ships and harbour. I grew up with family boating and race boats so I love boats!!

  4. Well John, you definitely need to come over. No shortage of boats over here on the Scottish coast. More than a few involved in the offshore oil and wind industry.
