Here’s a bit of a mystery. Â Mary Garne died on 7 June 1873 aged 55 years – around 144 years ago. Â I can’t help wondering why there is a second, smaller, gravestone in front of the larger gravestone. Â The smaller gravestone has the initials M.G on the stone and the same date – 1873. Â I wondered if Mary died in childbirth and the smaller gravestone is for the child who died. Â Did women give birth to children in their 50s in the 19th century?
