After the Brexit vote in my own country, the American elections and the forthcoming elections in Europe, I was searching for an image which best summed up our systems of democracy. Here it is. The Democracy Tree. Well and truly broken.

The Quiet Moment
This photograph was taken in October 2012 when the keel for our boat, Lucie, was laid. We have now been living on Lucie for over 3 years! We’ve just moved to our winter berth in Holland.

We live on a boat and people often ask us what happens to the human waste. Here’s the answer. The waste is sucked out of the boat’s holding tank and is taken away to be disposed of correctly (and legally). Devices such as these are known as [delightfully] ‘poo suckers.’ The poo sucking process is quick, easy and hygienic. The human waste in the holding tanks is often known as ‘black water’. Water from the shower and sinks is known as ‘grey water’.

Cute toadstools growing on a rotting log. A more inquisitive man would find out what they are called…
The Purple Fungi
For some reason this high-rise fungi was growing up the side of just one tree in the entire forest. I took the photograph yesterday, by this morning the fungi had all died back. Strange is the life of fungi.
The High-Rise Fungi
I’ve been out and about today taking photographs of fungi at Hemmeland (not far from Amsterdam and a delightfully secret bit of the Netherlands)

Thinking about Brexit and today’s news…….this is what happens in the UK when British people are upset (one way or the other!). John Bull (shown in the image) is the British equivalent of Uncle Sam.
Cartoon by Richard Newton (1777–1798), an English caricaturist who drew cartoons until typhus got him aged just 21. The poster below is all to do with our King George III (see The Madness of King George) who upset the Americans so much, they declared independence (over simplification I know) but, Americans….we were only joking!
